Woong San is, simply put, one of the top jazz vocalists in Korea. She performs actively in both Korea and Japan. Her dazzling, seductive appearance and sultry, mid-low range voice take audiences' breath away. At the youthful age of 18, Woong San went to Goo In Sa, a buddhist temple in the korean provice of choong buk to become a monk. the name woong san is a buddhist name given to her during her year-and-a-half sojourn at the temple. during her training, however, she attained a different kind of enlightment. she realized that her true life calling was not in religion but in music.
Woong San honed her skilled and seasoned vocal techniques over countless performances over the years in both korea and japan. from sensitive, soulful ballads to songs with heavy beats, her versatility spans all genres from blues to funk and latin.
Since 1998, Woong San has been actively performing as one of the Indisputable top artists in Korean and Japan. With tokyo and osaka as her primary bases, she has performed over 500 shows including average of four nationwide tours on annual basis.
In 2003, Woong San's first album, love letters, was released in korean and Japan. on this album, she performed with world-renowned musicians such as benny gree, lonnie plaxico, rodney green, conrad herwig, and suzuki hisatsugu. with her second album in 2005, the blues, she demonstrated the heights by revealing her talents as a songwriter as well. Her third album, yesterday, was released in 2007. from song composition to performance, critics gave the album almost unanimously high praise for her artisctic perfection and maturation of her Unique style.
in 2007, woong san released her third album, yesterday, which Received two korean music awards for best jazz & crossover album and best singer in march, 2008. she was also chosen as the best vocal artist from reader's poll.
in 2008, woong san went on a nationwide tour in japan with a musical ensemble that included the likes of japan's top musicians toku and onuma yosuke. traveling with this group under the project name the jazz super express project, she became the first korean artist ever to perform in blue note tokyo. she released her fourth album, in fall in love in both korea and japan, which album she took a role as a producer.
in 2009, she released miss mr., which consisted of her own compositions. she showed her distinctive and modern urban sound which again received stellar reviews from the critics.
in 2010, close your eyes was released in japan and received a golden disc award from swing journal. in 2011, special album "once i loved" was released and received the best jazz audio disc award.
woong san is no only involved full-time in the creation of music but is also active as an actress and tv show host.
